The Eastside Along Acequia Madre

The Eastside Along Acequia Madre

The acequia — an old irrigation ditch — runs beside the curb on the Eastside, a silver thread that whispers of centuries of gardeners who kept the water moving. Adobe walls glow like warm bread crust in the morning. Don Gaspar Avenue has a row of houses leaning toward the street as if listening.

Cafe Pasqual's at 121 Don Gaspar is the breakfast stop. Strong coffee, green chile, cumin in the air. The patina of a place that's been feeding the neighborhood for decades. The Shed on East Palace Avenue is the other anchor — red chile, pale adobe, a ritual stop for locals who know how the afternoon light falls across the Plaza's edge.

The Lensic Performing Arts Center is a block over. The New Mexico Museum of Art stands nearby with stone-porch warmth. Walk the Don Gaspar-Acequia Madre stretch around 5 PM — that's when the light forgives the adobe walls and the afternoon murmur of the city is at its best.
